WHAT IS DIY (DO-IT-YOURSELF)?

Posted by Davy Clark on

Do it yourself

Do-It-Yourself (DIY) is defined as an untrained person creating or doing something that in the past was assumed could only be done by professionally trained individuals in any *esoteric field or endeavor.

Esoteric defined:

  • adj. Intended for or understood by only a small group, especially one with specialized knowledge or interests.
  • synonym: mysterious.
  • adj. Relating to or being a small group with specialized knowledge or interests.

For instance, several times over the last couple of years our name brand, electrical clothes dryer broke down, needing repair. But, I simply did not want to pay the extreme pricing for a "trained" technician to come out to my home to do it for me. However, with a little time and exploration on the Internet, the manufacturer gave me all the info I needed to fix it myself, for real cheap. So, I did the repairs myself, following the professional information found on-line and the dryer remains working to this day, having used very inexpensive & easy to replace parts.

Likewise, it was once widely believed one had to be a professionally trained, stringed instrument Luthier, one that had first spent years as an apprentice-maker and then spent years as a journeyman making stringed instruments in order to create great harps that work excellently.

We now know that is not necessarily true; especially so in this Digital Information age. Any of us with any reasonable amount of intelligence, a wee bit of talent, and a will to do can make a great sounding & fun playing harp. The Internet and on-line harp making shops like this one can provide you with the information and materials you need to successfully build your own awesome sounding yet, affordable harp.

Go ahead and check out our harp kits, plans & books, materials & accessories to see how you can start to make your own harp today!
