You select & provide your own wood components to cut & shape your harp to create a unique musical instrument but, with John Kovac's HMS book and his pre-engineered sound & performance. Give us an email for further guidance or recommendations. Plus, you'll need to supply your own tools, glue, etc., to create & finish the harp.

If you plan on creating your own similar harp from scratch, we suggest using the included DIY book "Harpmaking Made Simple." The book has 3 plans included with full-sized template cutouts for 22, 29 & 36 string harps. Using the book makes it much easier to build your own folk harp far more quickly & successfully. (Please, see our Customer Reviews for pictures & stories of folks like you who have successfully built from our kit harps & plans.)

The various kits come with the following (Totals & materials depend on the string size of the harp you plan to build):

  • Solid brass eyelets
  • up to 2 Octaves of Wrapped bass strings & about 2 or 3 Octaves of Treble Mono-filament strings using Dupont's Tynex brand
  • String Colors are Blue C's & Red F's (Unless you specify the opposite in the Shopping Cart Notes: "Special instructions for seller.")
  • String Tuning Machines (Choose Chrome, Black, or optional Economy*)
  • Various kit-matching Screws & Hardware & feet, etc.
  • "Harpmaking Made Simple" master plans book included.

The optional classic Kovac DVD, Traditional Paraguayan Harp Making is available. Filmed at John Kovac's harp shop in the Shenandoah National Forest, Virginia, USA, the late, great harp maker & player, Geronimo Morinigo takes you through the steps of making a traditional Paraguayan folk harp. Very informative & entertaining. Watch this inspiring DVD before you make your own harp! Geronimo even plays the harp he makes at the end of the video.

An optional Electronic Guitar Tuner is available to assist you with your initial string tuning & keeping your harp in tune thereafter.

See John Kovac's classic Daily Moments Harp Kit Demonstration Video on YouTube.

OPTIONAL: Kits are available without all the accessories & HMS book if you have purchased one of these kits in the past since it is assumed you still have these specific materials on hand (HMS book, string winder & dowel plans). See the Hardware & String Only Options at the top buyer's choice menu.

Please note:  All wrapped bass strings are custom-made at the time of order & are not stocked. Please, allow up to 2 weeks for strings to be made & shipped after placing your order. Only one, combined shipment will be made for all string sets & materials ordered at the same time.

* Please note: Economy tuners are not warranted.

Economy tuners typically experience an expected failure rate of 15% or more, on average, during the first months (or longer) after installation & use. They are far less expensive & easier to afford but require exacting installation & careful use. Economy tuners are provided especially for beginners on budgets.

As necessary, over time, if a tuning mechanism drive gear gets damaged on your harp, you can use a spare tuner or buy a separate tuner mech and just use the parts from it like the drive gear alone. Economy tuner mechanisms are very quick and easy to change out if necessary.

We recommend using our Standard string tuning mechanisms, especially if this is your first harp project or if you are not mechanically inclined (regardless of how many years you may have worked with wood). Economy tuners can save some cost upfront but require much greater care in their installation and ongoing use.

We provide a tuner care document to help you get the best out of your economy tuner purchase. See this link.

If you make a mistake on your kit, even if not caused by us, please, notify us right away and we will see how we can help you to complete your kit anyway. You never know how we might be able to help you, which is our goal; for you to be successful in your harp building & playing! We won't abandon you in your kit-building process after the purchase, either. Let's work together!
